When booking an appointment at a varicose vein clinic or specialist service, you may not know exactly what to expect. In this article, I’ll explain how to best prepare for your initial consultation and the day of your procedure. I’ll also discuss follow-up and post-procedure recovery.

What to expect during your first consultation?

First, make sure you have a GP referral and call my rooms to book an appointment. You can choose from 4 different Perth metro area locations (Nedlands, Carine, Midland and Northam), whichever is closest or most convenient for you.

Your initial appointment is more than just a check-up. It’s about getting to know you and understanding the challenges you are facing, whether it’s varicose veins, leg swelling, leg ulcers or any other vein-related concerns.

“I will look at your health background and perform a physical examination to pinpoint the issues. It’s an opportunity to openly discuss concerns, ask questions, and share treatment goals. I believe in transparent care, so we’ll discuss risks, costs and the results you can expect from particular treatments.”

Next? An advanced varicose vein ultrasound

To fully understand what’s going on with your veins, we perform a specialist varicose vein ultrasound.

“Simon Prout is an experienced vascular sonographer who has been involved in more than 500 varicose vein procedures. He will carry out the initial bulk billed ultrasound scan, which I will then verify.”

This advanced vein mapping scan is done on-site and it shows us which veins are not working properly. This information allows us to plan and discuss with you the most appropriate treatment or management for you.

At our vein clinic here in Perth, we offer different types of varicose vein treatments, such as endovenous laser ablation, venaseal glue ablation, sclerotherapy and open surgery.

Taking into consideration the insights from the venous ultrasound, we decide which treatment option is best for you. During this consultation, we will take consent for the procedure. Our secretary will answer all your questions about fees and look in our calendar to plan the procedure.

Open surgery is performed in theatre, but all other procedures are minimally-invasive and carried out at our Nedlands clinic.

“Endovenous laser ablation, venaseal glue ablation, and sclerotherapy are performed on a walk in and walk out basis.”

On the day of your procedure you will meet nurse Mel. She is an experienced vein specialist nurse who has been involved in more than 500 varicose vein procedures. Mel will take you to the treatment room and discuss any further questions you might have.

You’ll meet Simon, our vascular sonographer, again. He will carry out a further ultrasound to look at your legs so that we can then prepare you for the procedure.

“The procedure is carried out with the latest and most appropriate technologies to ensure the best outcome.”

Recovery and follow-up care

Recovery is as crucial as the treatment itself. On the day of your varicose vein procedure, you will receive a post-procedure pack detailing the expected post-treatment journey.

Our vascular nurse will share her contact details with you and she will call you in the next few days to see how you are doing. In most cases, you will have a follow-up appointment (which is bulk billed) with the nurse and the sonographer. They will discuss any concerns and an ultrasound scan will be performed to ensure that the treatment was successful.

If all has gone well, you will see me again about 4 weeks after the procedure. However, if early concerns arise, I will see you earlier.
