Varicose Veins Avulsions Case study 007
Why this patient chose varicose vein avulsions

What are avulsions?
This 56-year-old woman presented with enlarging varicose veins in the right leg. Over the past few years the veins had become more prominent; she described afternoon heaviness and discomfort.
After clinical examination and duplex ultrasound, we planned multiple avulsions.
Avulsions are a simple way to remove lumpy surface varicose veins through tiny skin nicks. The skin is numbed; a fine hook gently frees and removes the problem vein; and the small openings usually do not need stitches. Avulsions can be done on their own or alongside treatments that close a deeper faulty vein, such as laser or glue.
Symptoms
A 56-year-old woman presented with right leg varicose veins and discomfort. The veins had increased in size over the last few years. After clinical assessment and duplex ultrasound, we planned multiple avulsions. She had inpatient avulsions in September 2025; by February 2026 the puncture sites had healed and her symptoms had settled.
Motivation for treatment
Goals of treatment
• Relieve discomfort in the right leg.
• Remove the enlarging surface varicose veins using multiple avulsions.
• Keep the plan straightforward with a clear recovery pathway and follow-up.
• Review healing and symptoms at follow-up; discuss future care if new veins appear over time.
Outcome
Four-five months after treatment, bruising had settled, and the leg felt lighter with improved comfort for daily walking. Cosmetic appearance was neater and she returned to usual activities.
As with all vein care, results vary by person; new veins can develop with time and follow-up is available in Nedlands, Carine, or Midland if needed.
